Northrop Grumman said it will collaborate with Diehl Defence to provide Germany with advanced air and missile defense systems.
The collaboration, which was formalized with the signing of a memorandum of understanding that Northrop Grumman announced on Tuesday, will enable the two companies to combine their expertise in exploring innovative solutions that would perfectly integrate Germany’s air and missile defense capabilities.
The MOU also covers opportunities for NATO and European allies to update their technologies in integrated air and missile defense.
Northrop Grumman brings its expertise in IAMD systems and control capabilities to the partnership, as demonstrated in the U.S. Army’s Integrated Battle Command System.
In August 2023, Ian Reynolds, the company’s director of network solutions, disclosed that Germany, along with Romania, Greece, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Spain, Denmark and Sweden, are interested in the IBCS platform.
According to Northrop Grumman, its system can complement Diehl Defence’s ground-based air and missile defense solution through allied systems on integration and interoperability.
Rebecca Torzone, vice president and general manager for global battle management and readiness at Northrop Grumman, who was in Berlin for the MOU signing ceremony, described the collaboration with Diehl Defence as “a pivotal moment” in the company’s mission to develop IAMD technologies with its German industry partners.
Torsten Cook, Diehl Defence’s senior vice president for ground-based air defense, also welcomed the partnership, noting that it offers new options for the customers of the company’s IRIS-T SLM surface-to-air guided missile to improve interoperability and increase warfighting capabilities.
