The United States has approved Poland’s request to purchase American-made missiles.
On Tuesday, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency announced that the Department of State has given the green light to sell 745 AIM-120C-8 Advanced Medium-range Air-to-Air Missiles and 821 AGM-158B-2 Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile Extended Range all-up-rounds to the government of Poland. The potential acquisition costs about $1.69 billion for the AMRAAM and $1.77 billion for the JASSM-ER all-up-rounds.
RTX and Lockheed Martin, as the manufacturer of the AMRAAM and JAASM, will serve as principal contractors to the FMS.
The AMRAAM, designed and manufactured by RTX, is equipped with an active radar and inertial guidance to locate its target. It also receives mid-course updates to ensure flexibility and precision.
According to RTX, troops from over 40 countries, including the United States, use AMRAAMs. The newest version of the weapon system is compatible with all variants of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter jet.
Meanwhile, JAASM is one of Lockheed Martin’s first cruise missiles. The AGM-158B-2 variant can deliver a 2,000-pound warhead to a target 1,200 miles away.
The proposed FMS aligns with U.S. foreign policy and national security objectives and will improve Poland’s capability to address current and future threats.
