The U.S.  Department of State has approved the planned sale of Javelin missiles worth an estimated $80 million to Romania. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress on Tuesday about the possible foreign military sale, with Raytheon and Lockheed Martin as the prime contractor.

Romania’s purchase order includes 263 Javelin FGM-148F missiles and 26 Javelin lightweight command launch units. The contractors will also provide related missile elements, such as basic skills trainers, simulation rounds, and technical and tactical assistance services.

The missiles will build Romania’s long-term defense capability and enable the country to counter present and future threats, without disrupting the European military balance, DSCA said. It also noted that the country will be able to integrate the weapons into its armed forces without difficulty.

Besides the Javelin deal, Romania was reported in October to have ordered $156.2 million worth of missile components and ground support equipment for the country’s Patriot missile defense system.
