Hewlett Packard Enterprise, University of Stuttgart Partner to Build Two New Supercomputers

Hewlett Packard Enterprise will build two new supercomputers at the University of Stuttgart in Germany to power research in computational engineering and the applied sciences.

The technology will be installed at the university’s High-Performance Computing Center, a research institution that provides computing resources for academic and industry users.

The high-performance computers, nicknamed Hunter and Herder, will have a total combined cost of $126 million. Funding will be provided by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and Baden-Wuerttemberg state’s Ministry of Science, Research and Arts through the Gauss Centre for Supercomputing.

The project will be divided into two stages. The first stage will establish Hunter, which will serve as a transitional supercomputer. It is expected to begin operation in 2025.

According to HPE, Hunter will be based on its Cray EX4000 supercomputer designed to support artificial intelligence, modeling and simulation, and high-performance data analysis.

Meanwhile, Herder will be installed beginning in 2027 for the project’s second stage. Once operational, it is expected to offer speeds on the order of 1 quintillion floating-point operations per second.

“Hunter and Herder constitute a decisive reaction to the challenges of limiting carbon dioxide emissions, and Herder will deliver not only dramatically higher computing performance but also excellent energy performance,” said Anna Steiger, chancellor of the University of Stuttgart.
