Physical and ditial identity solutions company Idemia Smart Identity is building one of the most advanced biometric systems in the world in Nigeria.
According to the Courbevoie, France-based company, it has renewed its long-time partnership with the Nigerian National Identity Management Commission to upgrade the African nation’s biometric system.
It said the upcoming system will be able to process 1 million 1:1 and 1:N identity verification searches per day.
NIMC’s current biometrics system was designed to handle only 100 million records, but Nigeria has already reached 90 million records.
The update will ensure that the organization will be capable of managing the entire nation’s population now and in the future.
“The new powerful system is future-proof and will ensure that all Nigerians have access to a secured, trusted identity, enabling them to exercise their rights and responsibilities as a citizen,” said Olivier Charlanes, senior vice president of Middle East and Africa at Idemia.
“Moreover, this contract, in the most populous country in Africa, demonstrates Idemia’s capability to deploy its technologies on a very large scale.”
NIMC’s new biometric system also adheres to the Open Standards Identity API, which enables seamless connectivity across the identity management ecosystem.
